The origins of the Black Madonna are unclear. According to legend, Luke the Evangelist drew the icon on a board of cypress wood which came from the the table of the holy family from Nazareth, doubtful from a historical standpoint. What on the other hand is certain however is that the icon has been the property of the monastery at Jasna Góra since 1384. Each year an approximated four to five million pilgrims visit the Black Madonna and along with Jeanne d'Arc she can be considered one of the most important Saints of Poland.
