The Jewish Quarter Kazimierz, Podgórze und Plaszów
Long Jewish Guided Tour
In 1335 the Polish King Kazimierz III. allowed the construction of a city just in front of the city wall of Krakow into which the Jews of Krakow were resettled following a pogrom in the year 1494. After the invasion of Poland in 1940 the Nazis set up one of the largest ghettos in Poland there. The guided tour will last approximately three and a half hours and will start at the center of Kazimierz at Szeroka square. At the south end of the square is the Remuh Synagogue which provides information on the history of the Jews of Krakow and is the only synagogue that is still used by the Jewish community today. After a one and a half hour walk through Kazimierz following the tracks of the Jewish past in Krakow, you will be taken to the ghetto set up by the Nazis in the quarter of Podgórze. Here is where the famous factory of Oskar Schindler was located. Close by is the labor camp at Plaszow which was raised by the Nazis on the territory of the former Jewish cemetery.
